Boca Chita Key is an island campground you reach only by boat, a short hop north of Elliott Key that feels removed from the city despite views of the Miami skyline on a clear day. The campground consists of a single designated tent site tucked into a grassy waterfront area with a picnic table and grill, and flushable toilets nearby; there is no drinking water, sinks, showers, or electricity, and no trash collection, so bring your own water, store food in your boat or an animal-proof cooler, and pack out everything you bring in. Navigation requires care: use a nautical chart or GPS and note that the harbor entrance is roughly four feet at low tide. Fees for overnight camping and docking are due on arrival or no later than official sunset; sites are strictly first-come, first-served and must be claimed in person, then paid on-site by scanning the posted Recreation.gov QR code (download the free Recreation.gov app and create an account before you come because cellular service on the key is limited). Once payment is made on-site there are no refunds or modifications, so verify that the single campsite is available before paying. The island's character is anchored by the 65-foot historic lighthouse built in the 1930s if park staff are present they may open the observation deck for panoramic views of nearby islands, Biscayne Bay and the skyline beyond. A half-mile trail begins just east of the restrooms and winds to the south end of the key near the pavilion, giving a short walk to explore shoreline, birdlife and mangrove edges. Boca Chita supports daytime recreational boating, paddling and fishing as well as the overnight camp experience, but be prepared for rules and seasonal realities: tents only in designated areas, no pets except service animals (this includes pets on vessels docked at Boca Chita), no ground fires on the key, and swimming is prohibited in boat harbors. Quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., insects can be heavy in warm months, and camping is limited to 14 consecutive days (no more than 30 days in a calendar year) all details to keep in mind when planning a short, self-sufficient island stay.
