Canaveral National Seashore sits midway along Florida's east coast on a low-lying barrier island where dunes, maritime hammocks and shallow lagoons create a patchwork of habitats that support thousands of species from mangroves and bromeliads to bald eagles and West Indian manatees. The seashore preserves both natural and cultural features: sea turtle nesting beaches, estuaries that once sustained Timucua communities, and ancient shell mounds that you can still explore. Backcountry camping here is strictly primitive and island-based: the park manages 14 designated island campsites (the official site-type record lists "14 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites," but note that RV or vehicle camping is not permitted within the seashore). Sites include a mix of natural islands and spoil islands, all reachable only by private boat, kayak or canoe, and set right on the water's edge for easy access to paddling, boating, fishing and wildlife viewing; you'll also find opportunities for hiking, swimming and, seasonally, guided sea turtle programs nearby. Camping on the islands requires a permit and an advance reservation sites may be reserved up to six months ahead for $20 per night. Fourteen named sites accommodate groups ranging from small parties to large groups (Orange Island 6; Homestead 8; Shipyard 10; Headwinds 10; Government Cut 20; Jones Canal 20; Brickhouse Cove 60; Bissette Bay 15; Middle Dredge 25; South Middle Dredge 25; Scout Island 20; South Dredge 40; East Winds 20; County Line 20). Canoe rentals (weather permitting) are available only for campsites #1 #5 at $25 per night for renters 18 and older (two adults plus gear per canoe); inquire at the Apollo Beach Visitor Center or call (386) 428-3384, ext. 0. Refunds are issued only for park closures due to weather or administrative reasons; otherwise cancellations 30 days or more before the reservation receive a full refund, cancellations 8 29 days out receive half the reservation value, and cancellations seven days or less before the reservation as well as no-shows are nonrefundable. Once a printed permit is issued no date changes are allowed (you may change the number of people for the same dates and campsite if done before printing); changing your entry date requires cancelling and rebooking.
