Gator Head Campground sits inside the Bear Island Unit of Big Cypress National Preserve, a low-lying mosaic of cypress strands, wet prairies and sawgrass that supports the freshwater flow into the Everglades and the coastal estuaries beyond. The campground is deliberately primitive and remote: there are nine campsites in the loop, and the reservation system lists them as both RV and tent sites, but park rules allow only pickup campers and tent camping in this backcountry area no trailers or larger RVs. Sites include a picnic table, a shared food-storage box and a metal fire ring; vault toilets are provided but there is no potable water, so bring everything you need for drinking, cooking and washing. Cell service is limited, reservations must be made in advance on Rec.gov with a fee of $10 per site, and for facility-specific questions call (239) 631-9988. Getting to Gator Head requires either hiking or an off-road vehicle with the required ORV permit (bicycles and foot access are also allowed); for ORV rules call 239-695-1117 or see the preserve's ORV information online. The Bear Island Unit itself offers more than 20 miles of backcountry trails where visitors can hike, bike, or follow designated ORV routes; the wider preserve supports fishing, paddling, hunting (seasonal, follow FWC regulations), wildlife viewing and auto touring as well. Everglades City and the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center are about 30 miles to the south and provide the nearest services, dining and a gateway into Everglades National Park, so plan your resupply and trip logistics accordingly when staying here this is a campsite for people who want a small, low-impact backcountry experience amid the swamp's plant communities and wildlife.

“I booked campsite 9 and it was so bad we decided not to stay. As sites 1-8 were perfectly mowed and had fire pits. Campsite 9 was overgrown and had no fire pit. ”
