Hopkins Prairie Campground sits in an oak hammock on a narrow peninsula that juts into a broad grassland, so the single campsite here (total campsites: 1) feels tucked under gnarled live oaks while grass and shallow ponds fan out around you. The interface between scrub forest and open prairie makes the spot a reliable place for birding songbirds in the trees, waders working the pond edges and the Florida Trail runs right through the area, with a year-round trailhead that lets day hikers head toward Pat's Island Trailhead or Juniper Springs. Water levels dictate much of the experience: when ponds are deeper you can launch a canoe or jon boat from the on-site boat ramp (there is a $3 per-vessel launch fee) to drift into the prairie's deeper pockets or reach better fishing spots; when the prairie is dry you'll be walking the shoreline and watching shorebirds from the shaded oak edge. Practical facilities are deliberately spare here: there's one campsite that accommodates both RV and tent setups, a vault toilet, and water available by hand pump. Hopkins Prairie is a designated camping area with minimal infrastructure and is open seasonally, though the Florida Trail trailhead remains a year-round access point for hikers and birders even when the camping area is closed. Access is rural the turnoff is about 9.2 miles north on SR-19 from SR-40, then follow posted signs and a sequence of unmarked, unimproved roads to reach the site and all visitors must display confirmation of payment in their vehicle dash (either the tear-off ticket from the fee envelope or the CONFIRMATION AND RESERVATION NUMBER from Scan & Pay; write the confirmation number on the provided envelope). The setting rewards simple, self-reliant camping: shade, prairie views, trail access, and close encounters with the seasonal rhythms of Florida's grassland wetlands.

“Camping host was a nice guy. Campground clean and quite. Hiking Trails are great. Ran nose to nose with a black bear, and had another one stalk my dog and me down the road. Lots of wildlife and ticks. ”
“Lovely spot with limited campsites and great views of the prairie. ”
