Mill Dam Group Camp sits on the shaded shore of the 168-acre Mill Dam Lake inside the Ocala National Forest, a 383,000-acre stretch of sand pine scrub and mixed hardwoods in north central Florida. The site is designed for large gatherings: there is 1 group campsite configured to accommodate both RVs and tents that can host up to 150 people, with a paved parking lot that holds up to 70 vehicles. Facilities at the recreation area include a covered picnic shelter, group grills, picnic tables and flush toilets; a separate entrance leads to the adjacent boat ramp for easy launching of boats, canoes, and kayaks. A broad swimming beach and lakeside picnic grounds give families space to spread out, while anglers specifically target the lake for bass. Wildlife is common in the shade of live oaks here; visitors may see turtles, deer, raccoons, many birds and even black bears and alligators, so practice usual precautions with food and pets. Access is straightforward from State Road 40 Mill Dam is about 15 miles east of Silver Springs and roughly 50 miles west of Ormond Beach; watch for Mill Dam/Half Moon signs a short distance from the recreational-area turnoffs. Mill Dam operates on a seasonal schedule: during spring, summer and early fall the area is day-use only; in the remainder of the year it opens as a group campground for both day-use and tent camping. Reservations can be canceled online or through the call center, but a $10 service fee is withheld from any refund and late cancellations may be subject to additional restrictions; refunds are not issued for inclement weather. This location has limited staffing, so call (352) 625-3147 for current conditions, availability and any operational questions before you head out.
