River Forest Group Site sits on a flat, grassy patch shaded by large live oaks along the St. Johns River within Ocala National Forest, a 383,000-acre forest that protects the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub. The campsite is designed for a single group there is one combined RV-and-tent site that can accommodate up to 125 guests, making it a common choice for family reunions and small wedding gatherings. A wide open field beside the river gives groups room for softball, volleyball or horseshoe games, and the nearby St. Francis Trail pushes into floodplain forests and pine flatwoods for long walks. If your group wants water time, the river shore is right there for canoeing, kayaking or bass fishing; more extensive outdoor options lakes, springs and miles of off-road trails popular with ORV users and seasonal hunters are scattered through the surrounding forest. The site's facilities focus on group cook-and-gather needs: a screened pavilion is provided for food preparation and cooking (plan to bring your own cook stoves), a recently built bathhouse serves the camp, and grills and picnic tables are on site. RVs are welcome but there are no electrical, water or sewer hookups, and all vehicles must remain in the designated parking area, while the camping surface is level and suitable for tents with some tree shade. The site is reached just across the St. Johns from DeLand generally accessed west from State Road 44 to County Road 42 and because policies, fees and seasonal availability can change, groups should check current reservation rules and charges with the National Forests in Florida or the Forest Service recreation reservation system before planning a visit.

“A nice site with clean bathroom facilities. The water access is a step down from the field. Overall a great site and location. ”
