St. Lucie South sits on the St. Lucie Canal, a working stretch of the 152-mile Okeechobee Waterway, and the campground's character comes from that watery edge: narrow marshes and tangles of aquatic plants meet a shady canopy of live oaks and sabal palms, and it's common to watch boats and the occasional manatee slide through the lock or to spot wading birds and the occasional alligator along the bank. Daylight here is organized around the canal bring a rod or a small boat and you can fish or cruise the south fork of the St. Lucie River, or follow the St. Lucie Nature Trail on the canal's north side to stretch your legs. For families, the visitor center, a group picnic shelter, a small playground (swing set) and a horseshoe pit give low-key options close to the campsites, while wildlife viewing and informal environmental education opportunities are a continuous draw for birders and anglers. The campground is small and straightforward: there are 21 total campsites 8 boat-in sites, 9 sites configured for both RV and tent use, and 4 tent-only sites so reservations can fill quickly during popular seasons; confirm fees, reservation rules and seasonal advisories with the park or its website before you go. Practical hookups are generous for a canal-side facility: all RV and cruiser (boat-camp) sites include 50-amp electric and water, and tent sites also have electric; a trailer dump station is on site. St. Lucie South is easy to reach from I-95 (Exit 101) via SR-76 and Locks Road, and it sits about 25 miles east of Lake Okeechobee while being just a short drive from Stuart's restaurants and shops. If you want a beach day or more wildlife viewing, Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, Hutchinson Island's beaches and the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce are all within reasonable distance for a day trip.
