W.P. Franklin Campground sits on a long finger of land where the Caloosahatchee River nearly encircles the site, giving campsites broad water views and quick access to the Okeechobee Waterway the 152-mile channel that links Florida's inland lake to both coasts. The campground is about 10 miles east of Fort Myers and is reached from I-75 by following the SR 80/SR 31/SR 78 corridor that leads toward the river; the approach feels more like entering tropical country than a suburban outskirt. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 37 SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: - 8 Boat-In Sites - 29 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites. All 29 RV sites and the 8 boat-in (cruiser) sites are fitted with 50-amp electric and water hookups, and the loop includes practical on-site features you'll use every day: a boat ramp, a fishing pier and a trailer dump station. A narrow neck of land connects the campground to the shore, so many pitches feel intimately close to the water; on calm mornings you may spot a sunning alligator along the bank or watch wading birds working the marsh edge. The setting makes the campground a base for water-centered activities: fishing for both salt- and fresh-water species, boating along the Caloosahatchee, and paddling into nearby Telegraph Creek's backcountry swamps are all common ways to spend a day. A distinct feature here is the cruiser sites, where people sleep aboard their boats while using campground amenities a convenient option if you want to be afloat at night without giving up hookups and a picnic table. Other available recreation at Lake Okeechobee includes camping, environmental education, hiking, picnicking, playgrounds, specialized sport sites and general water-sports and wildlife viewing opportunities; there are also concession activities nearby. Across the river the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers visitor center at W.P. Franklin South offers additional context about the waterway, and downtown Fort Myers with markets, stores and the Edison & Ford Winter Estates is a short drive away, while Gulf beaches sit roughly 45 minutes from the campground. For current fees, reservation details and seasonal availability, check the park's official information or contact the visitor center before you go.
