W.P. Franklin South Recreation Area sits on the Caloosahatchee River right at the Franklin Lock and Dam, where you can watch boats pass along the 152-mile Okeechobee Waterway linking the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The shoreline here alternates between stands of live oaks with Spanish moss, clumps of sabal palms and a fringe of water plants where wetland meets river; it's common to spot a gator basking on a bank or a burst of wading birds lifting off in a single motion. The site functions primarily as a day-use area with a visitor center that includes interpretive exhibits and environmental-education programming, but there are exactly two tent sites available for overnighting both listed as tent sites so if you're planning to camp bring only what you need for tent camping and check with the visitor center about availability before you go. Facilities are straightforward and suited to active days on the water: a boat ramp gives direct access for powerboats, canoes and kayaks, anglers can try both freshwater and saltwater species, and there are volleyball and horseshoe courts plus a playground for families. Several covered picnic sites, flush toilets and potable water are on site, and two reservable group picnic shelters each have water, electricity, six picnic tables and a large charcoal BBQ and can accommodate up to 50 people useful for larger gatherings. For additional outdoor options, Lee County's Manatee Park is about six miles west and Hickeys Creek Mitigation Park is two miles east; the Gulf beaches and J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge lie roughly 30 miles to the west. The area is accessed from Palm Beach Boulevard (County Road 80) east of I-75 via Old Olga Road and Franklin Lock Road; because the facility is primarily day-use and group facilities may require reservations, contact the visitor center or park office for current hours, fees and booking information.

“This was the perfect spot, we were blessed with great weather. It was clean and appeared to be well-maintained. I didn't think to bring anything to clean the grill but that's on me. Trash cans were empty and overall a great spot that we will reserve again in the future.”
“As always we had a great day. The park was clean and the kids enjoyed it. There were more than enough picnic tables and the trash cans were empty. ”
“It was the perfect site for our wedding.”
